March 31st is World Backup Day, and a great annual reminder to back up your software, systems, and hardware. Why is it so important? Here are some stats from WorldBackupDay.com:
- 30% of people have never backed up data
- 113 phones are lost or stolen every minute (think of all of that lost data!)
- One in 10 personal computers are infected with a virus every month
So to help you with World Backup Day, we are sharing five important tips:
Tip 1: Back Up Your Mobile Devices
Make sure that mobile device that you’re carrying around is backed up. It should be backed up to the cloud to protect all of that personal and business information you’re storing on there. Also, make sure the backup is functioning properly.
Tip 2: Back Up Your Cloud Data
With all of us using the cloud, backing up that cloud data has become essential. You might be thinking, ‘Oh, we have our stuff in the cloud, we don’t have to worry about backing up our data.’ The truth is – you need to worry about it more because our data is all in different places now.
Tip 3: Backup Onsite Servers and Computers
Anything that you have on the premises – such as onsite servers and computers – also need to be backed up. For computers, that includes anything stored directly on the computer.
Tip 4: Use Software That is Ransomware Proof
Make sure that your data is backed up with a piece of software that is ransomware proof. It seems that almost weekly a company or organization is hit with ransomware. With proper backup software, you can avoid the risk of ransomware.
Tip 5: Have a Backup Process
Process is critical when it comes to backups. You need to make sure that either you, or somebody else in the organization, is monitoring data backups, is testing, is reviewing configurations, is restoring data on a periodic basis. You don’t want the moment you are restoring your data to be when you find out whether your backup is working.
