So, you might be wondering why Techify — a business IT firm — is talking about TikTok.
This China-based social media app has attracted a lot of attention lately, after governments around the world started banning use of the device on government-issued devices. This include the federal government here in Canada, which took these steps in February. A few weeks later, the Ontario government took similar steps.
But we want to talk about TikTok today, because aside from the fact that the app is getting banned, there are some important lessons here for companies and organizations.
So, if a government can ban an app, what about your small business or organization? Do you have the same technology in place that you could also do that for your company?
Well, in fact, many people are already paying for that technology — you’re just not using it. It’s a service called Microsoft Intune, and if you have an E3 or a business premium license, it’s included in your package.
Intune is really mobile device management. It’s next-level cybersecurity. And it’s something that we here at Techify use with our teams and our staff.
It’s something you can implement at your company in a relatively straightforward way.
Why would you want to do this? Well, with almost everything being hosted in the cloud now, that also means most of our company data is available to our staff on their mobile phones. So, if you think about all of those documents being available on somebody’s phone, that’s a pretty big security risk.
What is somebody looses their phone? What if they leave your company? Do you have the ability to remotely wipe that phone and protect your data? Intune gives you that capability.
So, it’s not only governments and big business that have the capability to use advanced cybersecurity protocols; Microsoft has democratized these types of services and given small businesses and smaller organizations the ability to manage data at a high level.
